Your backlog is the total amount of inventory and contracts you have. For example, if you are a wholesale distributor you may have a warehouse with $50,000 of backlog inventory. If you are a landscaping company you may have a backlog of inventory including all your available construction materials as well as contracts for work that will start sometime in the near future. Generally, you always want to have a backlog of inventory and or contracts for work.
